Visitations

Sat Nov 28, 2009, 11:50 AM
My studio interviews are going pretty well and on Monday I'm flying out to meet the good folks at Gearbox. Then on Wednesday I'm flying out to meet the good folks at Digital Extremes. Busy week! Anyone have some good books to suggest for all the downtime I'm going to have while traveling? A couple weeks back I enjoyed reading through Brave New World on the trip to visit the Firaxis crew, who are some very cool cats indeed.

So I'm continuing to work my way through responding to the backlog of comments I have. Rest assured I read every one, just working on responding to everyone in one way or another. I really love the sense of community here and getting all this feedback is really enjoyable. :)

My brother Rob picked up Left 4 Dead 2 on release day and we've been playing it pretty much all the time since then. I never really managed to get into the original much, but with L4D2 I'm totally hooked. It's noticeably improved in every aspect over the original -- art, gameplay, level design. Some people might hate me for this but I even like the cast better. What do you think?

Crank crank crank

Hey folks! In the middle of a crunch right now so I've been neglecting responding to comments, but I should be freed up by around Tuesday or so. Thanks for all the encouragement and praise, hopefully I'll have time to respond to everyone before long. :)

Too much awesome

So over the weekend I logged into DA having been absent for about a week, and was like, "huh, I don't remember having that many pageviews." Then I saw all the new comments and faves and started getting really excited. I kept mumbling to myself, "this is nuts" while thumbing through the pages of messages. Sure enough, I got a DD! Big big thanks to ^technographer for featuring my sword design! I love all the enthusiasm in the comments, you guys rock! I also gotta say it's great how DA doesn't make it super obvious that you got one but lets you figure it out, that put a big goofy grin on my mug. :)

I haven't gotten to responding to all the comments yet, although I did take a moment to read over each individual comment. Normally I would have started cranking on replying to everyone already, but in a freak coincidence this also happens to be the same time that I've put my professional portfolio website together and started applying to game developers for my next job. Needless to say that's been taking up just about all my time for the past few days, but with the portfolio up and good to go at this point, I will have some time to spend on replying to everyone. I'm getting great responses so far by the way, I'll keep you guys posted on career stuff as it develops. Very exciting times!

Anyways, just wanted to take a moment now to say thanks to everyone for all the encouragement and interest! It's crazy uplifting and motivating, and I truly appreciate it. :headbang:

Teaser

Thu Sep 24, 2009, 7:44 PM
Sup folks, been busy with a few things here and there for the last couple weeks. Made some cool stuff I can't show yet, but the rest is personal work that I can give you a teaser for:

Got some bad news about the temple scene. It looks like I won't be able to get it finished before I run out of portfolio development time. The scope is just way too big for me to manage. However! In its place I'm working on a smallish sci-fi art deco hallway scene in which the above column will be prominently featured. I have set a firm deadline for this smaller-scope scene of Friday next week, although I will hopefully be able to take time apart from it to sculpt out the Statue Dude I recently concepted as well. But the hallway scene is ironclad. I will be making that sci-fi hallway a completed scene in Unreal Engine 3 by the Friday after next, period.

I also want to take part in one or two of the contests currently going on here at dA but that absolutely must wait until after I reach this portfolio deadline, at which point I will finally send out my work to studios and have some time on my hands until I start hearing back. Some interesting news on that front though, a headhunter for one of the 10 studios I've marked out as targets has actually contacted me out of the blue about a position there, without me ever reaching out to any recruiters yet, and it actually sounds like a very legit position that would be a great fit for me. I haven't got a finalized portfolio to show them yet so I sent off some sample work and an updated resume, and it will be interesting to hear back about that.

Oh yeah, and Dragon Con was awesome. I have to say, I was not expecting to see that much cleavage. Thankfully unrelated to that observation, it was also great that I got to hang out with most of my bros for the first time in years. Dan can put together some pretty wild Magic: The Gathering decks, let me tell you. Good times! Also: Atlanta, or at least that part of it, was inspiring. I gotta live in a city, man!

That's right bitches! Apparently Shatner and Nimoy wanted my signature so now I have to go. First time I've been to a convention and I'm looking forward to the craziness. Also looking forward to putting my older bro in his place -- the fool been talking some trash, steppin to me like he got mad Settlers of Catan skills. Well, he gonna see how it is. I throw down like Daniel Boone.
